Dieng Group of Temples
are located over 2,000 metres abouve sea level, on Dieng Plateau. A place which is belived
to be a sacred one of ancient Java. The temples found on this plateau are Hindu temples, built between late 8th to early 9th century, remarkable for their simplicity and spare sculptural ornaments, and recognized as the oldest temples of Java, |

| but their detailed
history is entirely lost, and remains a mystery until now. There is only one assumption,
that they are connected with the Sanjaya Dynasty. Who actually built them ? Was it a permanent settlement, the centre of a kingdom perhaps ? Or was it just a place of pilgrimage, crowded on holy days, but more or less deserted in between times ? Excavation of this rich and extensive site, and reconstruction of the buildings and temples is continuing, but still a very great deal remains to be done. There is still a hope - though faint - of one day, finding an inscription that will clear up the mystery about these temples.
