Sambisari - a Hindu
temple - was just discovered in 1966. When found, the temple was buried about 6 metres
under the present surface - which were rice-fields, crossed by a village road. The ancient
walls, doorways, and altars, had been finely preserved under centuries-old layers of
volcanic ash and dust. The temple was dated to the end of 9th century. |

| About 18 kilometres from
Sambisari, there is Mt. Merapi, an active volcano, that erupted early in 10th century.
Experts believed that Sambisari was buried by this eruption. It was probably made by one of the rulers of ancient Mataram Kingdom. Still lots of informations about this mystery temple is being researched by the archaeologists. Watching Sambisari emerge from the soil, you'll wonder..... how many more temples are hidden in the heart of Central Java.......
