Still located in the
area around Prambanan Temple, Kalasan was built around 778AD. According to the ancient
inscription, Kalasan had been built in honour of Tara, the female Bodhisttva.
Further, the inscription told that Kalasan actually had been built by two kings in
cooperation, a Buddhist Syailendra, and a Hindu of Mataram. One of the outstanding features of Kalasan, is the huge kala above |

is usually seen in Hindu temples, not Buddhist. It is believed that the presence of kala
here is because of the cooperation between the two kings. Originally, there were once three other smaller temples around the main one. The main chamber once housed a statue of Buddha. It is believed that the statue was a very large one, possibly about 6 metres in height, and was made of bronze.
