| Plaosan Temple |

Plaosan is located about one kilometre east side of Sewu Temple. Built in the 9th century, Plaosan is very unique and interesting. The temple was built by a Syailendra princess (which is a Buddhist) and her husband Rakai Pikatan (a Hindu ruler of ancient Mataram Kingdom). With that background, Plaosan has the touch of both Buddhist and Hindu. It is also one example of religious tolerance in the ancient. | ||
| The temple consists of
two parts, lying north, and south of each other. The northern one has two big temples, and
the southern only has one. All of those temples are rectangular, two storeyed,
three-roomed buildings. Each of them is surrounded by rows of small shrines and stupas
(Buddhist monument), and linking them together. Since it had suffered considerable damage, major restoration has been made. Although Plaosan is not completely restored, but it has already showed many unique and unusual features, like the very fine kala (demonic head as a guard on Hindu temples) found above the windows of the temples, as an assimilation between Buddhist and Hindu.
