Solo offers a wide variety of local
Javanese dishes, but Chinese and Western ones are also available. Below are some of the special Javanese dishes that you can
find and taste in Solo.
- Gudeg
Gudeg, is the speciality of Solo and Yogyakarta, consisting of young jackfruit boiled in
coconut cream and spices, served with buffalo hide boiled in chili sauce, chicken pieces,
egg, and gravy.
- Nasi Liwet
Rice cooked in coconut cream with garnishes, served in a banana leaf.
- Sate
Chicken meat, grilled on skewers, served with peanut sauce.
- Gado-Gado
Mixed vegetable salad, served with coconut sauce and shrimp crackers pieces on top.
- Soto
Javanese clear soup, served with potato chips, chicken pieces, and white noodles.
- Ayam Goreng
The Javanese-style friend chicken.
- Srabi
The sweet coconut cream cake, with many kinds of flavours, sold at night on little carts
along the mainstreet of Solo, Jalan Slamet Riyadi.
- Es Buah
Excellent iced fruit drink.
- Wedang Jahe
Special ginger drink, boiled with spices. Sold at night, mostly at "warung"
stalls, accompanied with a variety of local snacks.
- Jamu
Jamu is a general word for traditional herbal medicines, that have been used for hundreds
of years in Java.
